The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of

I suppose a significant few of you would have heard of the name Susan Boyle. For those who haven't she is a Scottish singer who received general attention, when she first appeared in the show, Britain's got talent. Now the thing that set her apart from all the usual sort of people you see on television, is that the first impression you get is nothing particularly remarkable.
When she first appeared on the show, the public as well as the judges, sort of looked upon her as a bit of a joke. They saw a 47 year old woman, who was not remarkable in her looks or in her demeanour, someone who seemed cheeky enough to have the audacity to come and participate in a well known television show.
Well, nevertheless, the judges expecting to chuck her out the minute she would sing, asked her to go ahead.
The song she sang was, "I dreamed a dream" from Les Misérables. And frankly, her rendition took the crowds by storm.
So much so, that by the end of her performance, she received a standing ovation.
Now, before she had sung the song, one of the judges, Simon Cowell, asked her, what's the dream? And she answered "I'm trying to be a professional singer". Now, on being asked why she hasn't been successful so far, she said that she never had the opportunity. And furthermore, she hoped to be as famous as Eileen Paige(a famous English singer) . Now, this earned her a couple of guffaws from the audience, and raised eyebrows from the judges.
Nevertheless, the minute she started singing, all the smirks from the audience were soon replaced by a look of awe.
And the rest is history.
Last I heard, she has been awarded a music contract from Sony music, and is well on her way to fame and stardom.
I have a lot of adoration for the woman, who in spite of the hostility from the audience, managed to win their hearts by the end. Its like something out of the books and novels.
In life, such incidents really inspire you and make you think that there is nothing out there which is impossible.
The thing is, I can completely relate to her.
It is not uncommon, for people to put you down, snub you, or discourage you, when you speak to them, of your dreams, your ambitions or your innermost wishes.
People have a way to put each other down, and make the other person feel worthless, or like some sort of insignificant insect.

It takes a great deal of courage and self confidence, to brace yourself to all the smirks and the guffaws that will follow you when you set out to achieve your goals.
I don't know why humans keep underestimating one another. Perhaps its the result of their own cowardice, or their own insecurity.
But all in all you have teachers telling children that they are stupid and thoroughly incompetent. You have "friends" who smirk when you tell them what you want to do with your life.
Unfortunately sometimes, even parents can end up discouraging their children.
The biggest joke is, when Einstein was a child, his school teachers thought him to be "dull" and unable to learn things.
We all know then who had the last laugh.

People have told me all sorts of things, through school and collage.
Even now, when I tell some of my "friends" that I want be a specialist in so and so field, I cant help notice the judgemental look, which reads "are you kidding me"?
Like I said, humans seem to get some sort of pleasure in putting each other down.
The thing is, like Susan, I suppose the best thing to do, is to wear your best smile, and look nonchalantly at your judging audience.
They will eat their words in due time anyway.
Its very rare to have people genuinely encourage you, when you set out to live your dream.
Some of us are fortunate in that aspect when our friends or family are happy for you, and egg you own to do your very best.
But for the remainder, the best thing to do will be to hold your head high, and not care a damn about those who keep putting you down.

All of us have a right to live our dreams. But its just our own inner fears and insecurities that keep us from achieving them.
It really gets my goat, when people underestimate me. And frankly many a time I have as a consequence, felt discouraged and forlorn. But I have in time learned to make peace with the fact that I don't have to give a damn about what people think.
Its up to us to prove the world wrong and have the last laugh. And making all the people who once called you stupid, ugly, or just plain dumb, eat their own words.
The worlds one big huge reality show by itself. And frankly one needn't be perturbed by a cynical and narrow minded audience.
You know that you have got it in you, and that's what counts.
For its the sort of stuff that dreams are made of.

Have a dream and Chase it buddy, otherwise you will not know which way you want to go... I believe that our dreams decide the way we should take in our lives and sets us apart from everyone otherwise you get caught in a rut like every normal person in this world...

Only when you dream will you care enough to achieve them or your life is as aimless as a wing of dandelion flying away...Nobody and as you said not even parents encourage us to go ahead and do something we is human nature but that should'nt deter us from doing what we want. I always wanted to be a writer but my parents never encouraged it and becoz of that I wasted a major chunk of my life thinking what to do but finally I did become one and my parents now respect me for what I am.

Well said, Vyas. If we believe in ourselves, we can surely conquer all that we think of. It's all in the head and so we need to dream/ think right.. instead of paying attention to what the world does.

Just pat your shoulders yourself and proceed to work on your goal… and for that putting down attitude of others, need to pretend deaf and dump, which would suffice…

Should be dumb ..typo error :)

I must admit that I have ignorantly fail to hear Susan Boyle sing, even though my Yahoo Messenger mentioned her frequently. I just wish her good luck in everything she does.

The stuff that my dreams are made of... are mostly dreams and the effort to make them come true. I dream to be popular, and through efforts (good and evil) I was successful. I dream to be unique, and through modifications and of course boosted by my evil persona, I AM different and people put me in a class of my own.

Heck, I dream to be a millionaire but as for now, I cannot find a truly dastardly and foolproof plan to achieve that.

Sometimes, all we can do is dream. :)

Brilliant topic for a post buddy!
Especially the line -"People have a way to put each other down, and make the other person feel worthless." Wonder why they do it though! :-/ Even I am surrounded with such people all around me! After a while u just start avoiding meeting those ppl if possible, don't u? I mean, nobody wants to stick around with an energy leech! We all like to be with people who make us feel good about ourselves and about life! Huhhh! People have become so illogical these days! Anyways, what can be done about it! We can't change people, can we? So we just learn to ignore them & go about making our dreams come true!

A good take.
But,if you have passion towards your dream, only then you can achieve it. then you won't have any insecurities and it won't matter to you when people underestimate you.
"World is a reality show itself". Loved that line :-)

very well said , Vyas. The susan boyle incident also made me wonder how much we're judged based on our looks. Susan was taken on a face value , her messy hair and mismatched clothes automatically meant a lack of talent for many.
It shocked me as to how prejudiced the so called civilised world still is!!

It takes more Susans to teach the world to shed its prejudice.

I stumbled upon your page just out of curiosity and now I feel I must thank you, actually, for this beautiful post.
I dont know if I sound a bit exaggerating, but this piece really inspired me to do something I wouldnt have done normally. Not a big deal or anything, but still..

Infectious optimism :)

"All of us have a right to live our dreams".
Inspiring stuff, bro.
God Bless.

True Vyas, who knows what's in store for us in the future, all comes down to believing in our own self.

Couple of things I'd like to add on about Susan Boyle, if I may, there were quite a few pages quoting Ellaine Paige as Ellen Page, the twenty-something actress. Was glad when that was over. second, the spotlight thrown on her BUrberry scarf! I thnk that was a lil too much!

Vyazz said...

@Mukund: Quite true, we indeed get stuck in a rut, when we abandon our dreams and become one with the rat race. Its our dreams that set us apart from the rest!!

Vyazz said...

@Rads: Yeah..there are some things in life that a person must achieve all by himself. In an ideal world usually those close to you help achieve your goals. But circumstances of late seldom being ideal, one has to make an effort by him/herself. But as long as you continue to believe in what you want, I doubt anything can stop you in achieving your goals. :)

Vyazz said...

@Kadambari: thnx...and yeah..if all your actions are curtailed by what the world thinks and judges you by, then there's a good chance that you end up in a rut. Without any further scope for self realization.

Vyazz said...

@Shadowthrone: Well, whenever you get the chance, you should see that episode. Its on youtube. Glad to know that you look forward to achieving ur dreams. Nice dream bout wanting to be a millionaire!!!...guess thats one dream we have in common!!! :P

Vyazz said...

@Kaddu: Nice take on the word energy leeches. :)
Yeah...there are leeches in and around everywhere!!! Like I said, best bet would be cool diplomacy but at the same time not paying attention to them!!! We cant always change people, but we can always change ourselves!!!

Vyazz said...

@Vani: True!!! thing would indeed be to pat ourselves on our backs instead of expecting some so called "close person" to do it for you!!! :)

Vyazz said...

@Ramya: Thnx...and yeah....its true, when you are passionate about your goals, it matters little what ppl say or think. But nevertheless, like Kaddu said, one ought to stay clear of the energy leeches, lest they dampen your spirits!!!

Vyazz said...

@Gymnast: I sometimes think people call themselves civilized so that they can feel good about themselves. But in reality they will always harbour primitive notions of prejudice, envy and jealousy.
Its a pity actually, but glad to know that there are people like Susan, to prove them wrong!!!

Vyazz said...

@Rameez: Your very welcome!!
Glad to know you liked it!!! Like you said, optimism is always infectious!!!...always nice to spread around a good word!!! :)

Vyazz said...

@Varun: True, like I said, its all about believing in ur self, and not giving a damn about what people think!!
And bout the Burberry scarf...the media always has a knack of focussing on the most trivial aspects and making a big deal outta everything!!
And its no biggie, if u read it late...jus glad to know that u did. :)
Truth be told I have been pretty busy as well, and the next few weeks are quite crucial to me(academically)!! So I might not be that regular in posting!!..will try to be around the block though!!!

Wheres my comment? Im so sure I read this one...hmm perhaps i was at the airport and just read and didnt comment, so here goes -

You will always find people who have something to say - its like THEY know you better than you know yourself! Isnt that ironic?? :)

We know what we are capable of, within rational limits and I believe most of us are rational. For e.g. some wannabe Idol singers are not rational, no matter what you say!:)

It is hard to push against the tide , esp when the tide meets you at many points in life. Ive learned to focus on particular things and keep things to myself. I share what I need to when the time is right coz honestly if i think I can do it, I can do it, I dont need your opinion (those evil, judgemental people with no hope/dreams). I know theyll probably say what they have to anyways for e.g. oh you want to study there? Well, thats super hard to get into!! Meaning??

Note to self: Whats your authority on it? If you ahve it great, Ill listen, if not, then no point worrying ....we can stop the conv right now or then Ill just pretend I didnt hear ya.

Im sure youve read some of these type of stories where successful people have been ridiculed or even told they have no talent e.g. Fred Astaire. I think they are very inspirational!

So in conclusion of my lengthy comment - reaching for your dreams is all life is about, WHATEVER that dream maybe, to be a neurosurgeon or to work with kids in Darfur. We cannot let some stupid, silly mind get in the way! Its ONE life.

Very very inspirational! Have a goal, and follow it doggedly.. Never lose sight of what you want!
That line- Life is a reality show is very true! We're constantly trying to prove ourselves, not knowing what we really want!
